Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. It causes you to repeatedly stop and start breathing while you sleep. There are several types of sleep apnea, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea. This type of apnea occurs when your throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.

Risk To Health
There is significant research that suggests between 30 and 50% of patients with high blood pressure, especially those requiring more than one drug for treatment, that snore, have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Individuals who smoke, or drink regularly also have a higher change of developing OSA.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be treated effectively once they are diagnosed. You do not need to endure poor sleep and suffer the knock-on effect it has on the rest of your life and health.
CPAP Therapy
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most effective treatment for OSA. A small machine sits next to the bed and blows low-pressure air through a mask that fits over your nose, mouth, or nose and mouth. The pressure is enough to keep the airway open and prevent it from collapsing during sleep. If OSA is corrected, there is usually immediate improvement in sleep quality, snoring, daily health, and resolution of daytime tiredness.

Why do I snore so loudly?
When we are awake we have sufficient muscle tone to keep the airway open. When asleep we lose this muscle tone and the airway narrows. This reduction of breathing space is not a problem for most of us but for some it is the precondition for snoring. Snorers may have an additional feature, which is an obstruction of some kind somewhere between the Adams apple and the tip of the nose. This blockage can be swollen tissue, congestion or a deformity.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a relatively common condition where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, interrupting normal breathing. This may lead to regularly interrupted sleep, which can have a big impact on quality of life and increases the risk of developing certain medical conditions.
Signs of OSA in someone sleeping can include: loud snoring, noisy and laboured breathing, repeated short periods where breathing is interrupted by gasping or snorting.

What happens if Obstructive Sleep Apnea is left untreated?
Undiagnosed and untreated obstructive sleep apnea syndrome can lead to abnormal physiology that can have serious implications including increased cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic disease, excessive daytime sleepiness, work-place errors, traffic accidents and death.

Can Obstructive Sleep Apnea be treated?
Treatments for Obstructive Sleep Apnea are available. One treatment involves using a device that uses positive pressure (CPAP) to keep your airway open while you sleep. Another option is a mouthpiece to thrust your lower jaw forward during sleep. In some cases, surgery might be an option too.

What is a CPAP Ventilation Machine?
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP machine uses a hose connected to a mask or nosepiece to deliver constant and steady air pressure to help you breathe while you sleep.
